WELCOM TO Switzerland

Entry Into Confederation

Switzerland is called “Confederation but it is in fact a federal state. Each of the twenty-six cantons has its own government, parliament, constitution and courts, but all are united around a central power which also has a constitution, government, parliament and courts!

A UNIQUE DEMOCRACY
Switzerland has direct democracy: the people exercise power without going through a representative! Thus, an adult citizen (from 18 years old) can propose a news – this is called an initiative – or oppose a law passed by the Parliament (referendum).
RELIGIONS IN SWITZERLAND
There is no state religion in Switzerland. Everyone has the right to have their own beliefs everywhere without being bothered. However, twenty-four cantons claim to be either Catholic or Protestant. Neuchâtel and Geneva are secular.
OFFICIAL LANGUAGES
Switzerland has four official languages and many dialects! In the German-speaking cantons, German is used in writing, but Swiss German is spoken on a daily basis. And everyone has their own Schwyzerdütsch!

The Swiss economy is heavily dependent on its banking and finance industries, and is considered to be one of the largest centers for private banking in the world. In addition, Switzerland is also home to many multinational corporations and is a leading exporter of pharmaceuticals, machinery, and precision instruments.

Switzerland has a federal system of government, with powers divided between the federal government and the cantons (states). The country operates as a direct democracy, with citizens able to participate in the legislative process through the use of referendums and initiatives. The Federal Assembly, made up of two chambers (the National Council and the Council of States), is responsible for making and passing laws. The federal government is headed by a seven-member Federal Council, with each member serving as a government minister and representing a different department.

Despite its strong economy and political stability, Switzerland faces ongoing debates over immigration, taxation, and its relationship with the European Union. However, the country remains one of the wealthiest and most stable in the world, and is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live and do business.

History

History and Culture

Switzerland has a rich and diverse history, with roots dating back to the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, the country was divided into small, independent city-states, which eventually formed into the Swiss Confederacy in 1291. This confederation, which was centered around a common defense against foreign invaders, laid the foundation for modern Switzerland as a neutral and independent nation.

Throughout its history, Switzerland has maintained its neutrality and has not participated in major European wars, making it a symbol of peace and stability. It has also served as a home for many political refugees and has a long tradition of granting asylum to those in need.

Swiss culture is a unique blend of German, French, Italian, and Romansh influences, and is reflected in the country's diverse architecture, cuisine, and language. Switzerland is also known for its high-quality chocolate, cheese, and wine, as well as its intricate watchmaking and fine jewelry industries. The country is home to numerous museums, galleries, and theaters, and hosts many cultural events and festivals throughout the year.

Switzerland is also a hub for outdoor recreation, with its stunning Alpine landscapes, crystal-clear lakes, and well-maintained hiking and skiing trails. This love for the outdoors, combined with a strong appreciation for the arts and culture, makes Switzerland a truly special place.
